The Problem

Each year, millions of tons of valuable materials are "lost" — left in storage, overlooked, or sent to landfills before ever being used.

Our Solution

We Turn Deadstock Into FoundStock

The FoundStock certification authenticates deadstock — unused excess materials that never made it to market — so they can be traced, verified, and put to use by brands and designers.

Control Union and Peterson conduct third-party audits, bringing global expertise in material certification.

FAQ

Your Questions Answered

How does the FoundStock Standard define ‘deadstock’?

Deadstock refers to unused, pre-consumer textile materials, such as yarns, fabric rolls, or raw goods, that were produced but never used, shipped, or sold. This also includes unfinished items that were developed for a specific purpose but were set aside or discarded before fulfilling that purpose, and have been held in storage for at least 90 days.

What types of materials are eligible for FoundStock certification?

FoundStock certifies unused, surplus textile materials that never entered the market. This includes full-width fabric rolls, and yardage that were produced but not used. The Standard applies exclusively to pre-consumer materials—not post-consumer items, trims, cuttings, returns, or partially used stock. While certification is currently limited to textiles, we may expand into other material categories in the future.

How long is the certificate valid for?

A FoundStock Scope Certificate is valid for 24 months from the date of issue, provided that the organization maintains compliance with the Standard.

Why does FoundStock have 3 different levels for Certified Materials?

The Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels reflect the depth of traceability and documentation provided by the certified organization. While all levels meet FoundStock’s core requirements, higher levels offer more detailed information—such as environmental or quality data—that supports stronger sourcing decisions.

Do I need to be certified to purchase or use FoundStock Certified Materials?

Only the organization certifying the materials needs to undergo the FoundStock audit. However, if you're using FoundStock Certified Materials in a product and want to use the FoundStock name, logo, or tag, you'll need claim approval and a Transaction Certificate to verify the material’s origin and authenticity.
